FedEx Ontario Expansion

FSB was the Architect of Record and Engineer of Record on the FedEx expansion project at the Ontario International Airport. The expansion consists of 194,000 SF of new construction on approximately 66 acres. The new construction includes a 179,600 SF main sorting facility and a 14,400 SF ground support equipment (GSE) maintenance building. This expansion also included access points for FedEx aircrafts, an employee/visitor entry, and parking areas for employees, truck trailers, and tractor units. Because FSB knows that communication between all stakeholders is key to a successful project, the design team was in communication not only with FedEx, but also the Ontario International Airport Authority regarding the site and development plans.

The building design is contemporary and attractive while also being cost effective and functionally efficient. The main sorting facility features a 129,500 SF warehouse with state-of-the-art package sorting machinery, along with designated maintenance and administration areas. This new sorting equipment allows FedEx to accommodate 12,000 packages per hour.

Attached to the sorting facility are the Sort Maintenance, Facility Maintenance and Line/Aircraft Maintenance departments. These departments are responsible for managing, maintaining and storing parts for sort, facility and line/aircraft equipment, vehicles, etc.

Towards the east end of the main sorting facility is the two-story Administration department, which houses most management and administrative functions including, offices, conference and training rooms, main locker rooms/restrooms and break rooms for the sort facility. A one-story wing for the Security department includes the facility’s main entry with a security screening area for employees and visitors. Adjacent to the entry and screening areas are the security support spaces, such as administrative offices, a conference room, and locker rooms.

A separate GSE maintenance building is located to the west of the main sorting facility to maintain all vehicles associated with the sort facility.

Additionally, a 15′ high privacy wall will be located along the western, northern, and eastern perimeters of the truck trailer and tractor units parking areas to provide visual security around the docks and associated areas. All systems were designed to comply with the requirements of the California Title 24 Building Energy Efficiency Standards and the FedEx Express Hub Criteria.
